Feeling stuck at midlife therapy in San Francisco, Pacifica, and online across California
You have a good life.
So why does something feel missing?
On paper, it all works. The career, the home, the people you love. You built this, and most of it feels good.
And still, you find yourself wondering, "Is this it?" You feel a numbness, like you are going through the motions of a life that was supposed to feel like more than this by now.
That numbness is worth paying attention to. You built a life you thought would bring meaning and contentment. And while, to a large extent, it has, so much focus on external expectations left little room for the things that make you you.
Long before you could question it, you absorbed a picture of what a life was supposed to look like. You went after that vision. It held a lot of promise, and wanting it was not a mistake.
But that vision didn't contain many of your own wants, needs, and dreams. No one else paid much attention to those longings, so you didn't either. Going with what was expected felt easier and was rewarded.
So now, at midlife, someone asks what you want or who you are outside of your roles, and you go blank.
Maybe you've caught yourself thinking:
I should be grateful. Other people have real problems.
I don't even know what I want anymore.
I feel stuck.
What if what’s missing is you?
There is more of you to bring to your life.
MY APPROACH
Including your wants, needs, and dreams in your choices is how you get unstuck.
A vital and deeply meaningful life comes from the inside, not from meeting a standard someone else set.
We begin with the life you have built.
In our work together, we look closely at it, with curiosity and without judgment. We sort out where you are thriving, what no longer fits, and what got planted there because it was expected of you.
Then we identify what you want now.
We look at what it would take to make room for it in your life.
We also explore what gets in your way.
The lifelong beliefs and patterns you have lived with don't just go away once you gain clarity on living authentically. Guilt shows up when you begin to choose your needs or wants rather than appeasing others, an inner critical voice tells you it is too late or you are being too selfish, and the people who were more comfortable with how things were push back.
This is where the real work happens.
Learning to manage those feelings as you shift your priorities is the part that makes the change hold, and it is where having someone in your corner matters most.
The difference that therapy can make when you feel stuck at midlife:
Gain clarity on who you are now, including your identity, values, and priorities
Navigate complex emotions such as grief, guilt, and uncertainty
Quiet the inner critic who says it is too late or too selfish
Make decisions based on what matters to you rather than what is expected
Build the resilience to hold your ground when people push back
Find your way to a life that has more of you in it

Frequently Asked Questions
-
EWhether you call it a midlife crisis or something else matters less than what is underneath the concern. Wondering about this suggests you are questioning where you are in your life right now. It doesn't mean you have to blow up your life. What usually brings people to therapy at this stage is a feeling that something is missing or a question about whether this is all there is. Midlife is a developmental stage, and the questions that come with it are worth taking seriously. They are not a sign that something is wrong with you.

The question I would be considering is how much the stuckness is affecting your ability to function well in your life. Are you having trouble getting your work done, being present in your relationships, or sleeping regularly? Are your thoughts distracting you to the point that you cannot focus? When the answer to those is yes, something more than feeling stuck may be going on, and that is worth looking at together. A consultation is a good place to start sorting it out.

It can. If you are asking this question, I would guess that you have a sense that something is not going well in your life. Perhaps from the outside it looks like you are ticking off all the boxes, and yet you feel discontent, unsatisfied, or unhappy. What brings you here does not need to be a crisis. Wanting to feel happier is reason enough.
